The Chieftain was first published by Warner in September, 1991. In 1996, Kelvori published a Russian translation in two books, the first of which contained The Chieftain and the first half of The Captain, while the second book contained the second half of The Captain together with The King. The Chieftain was republished, both in paperback and ebook format, by E-Reads, Ltd., New York, in May/June, 2009. The ebook was republished by Orion Publishing Group, London in December, 2011. In 2012, Basilisk Verlag published the first German translation.
In The Chieftain, John Norman didn't use any titles for the 25 chapters in the book.
