The Universal-Tandem Edition, consisting of 11 titles, and 32 printings, was published between June, 1970 and September, 1978 by Universal-Tandem Publishing Co., London. The edition features the artwork of: G. Wood, Fred Gambino and Chris Achilleos. The covers can be organized in four different softcover series, each with, sometimes only slightly, different cover art or design.
British First Universal-Tandem Series
British Second Universal-Tandem Series |
British Third Universal-Tandem Series
British Fourth Universal-Tandem Series |
The British First Universal-Tandem Series was published between June 17, 1970 and March 29, 1972. The series consists of 3 titles and 3 printings.
The British First Universal-Tandem Series can be identified by the white Tandem Logo in the top-left corner of the front cover and the text "Tandem Science Fantasy" just above the title. Neither the copyright page nor the back cover contain any information about the cover artist. The only reference is that Outlaw of Gor was made and printed in Great Britain by The Garden City Press, Ltd., Letchworth, Herts; while Priest-Kings of Gor was made and printed by C. Nicholls & Company, Ltd. I presume the cover artist is listed on another page, for several Internet resellers have claimed that G. Wood is responsible for the cover art of the British First Universal-Tandem Series and the British Second Universal-Tandem Series. For now, I am presuming they are right.
Each of the three covers has a tag-line:
The British Second Universal-Tandem Series was published between October 25, 1972 and February, 1976. The series consists of 9 titles and 15 printings.
The British Second Universal-Tandem Series can be identified by the white or black Tandem Logo in the top-center of the front cover. Some books, like Tarnsman of Gor, Nomads of Gor, and Assassin of Gor have the text "Tandem Science Fantasy" below the logo; others, like Outlaw of Gor, Priest-Kings of Gor, Raiders of Gor and Captive of Gor have the text "Science Fantasy" in the top-left corner; while Hunters of Gor and Marauders of Gor only have the logo. As explaned above, for now, I am presuming the cover art is by G. Wood.
Each of the nine covers has a tag-line:
The British Third Universal-Tandem Series was published in March, 1977. The series consists of 3 titles and 3 printings.
The British Third Universal-Tandem Series uses a slightly different white or black Tandem Logo in the bottom-right corner of the front cover. This is the first Tandem series that uses full cover artwork, with the author's name at the bottom of the cover. Again, the copyright page doesn't mention the cover artist, and there don't seem to be any signatures on the front covers. Several Internet resellers have claimed the artwork is by Fred Gambino. For now, I am presuming they are right. There are only three books in this series, the Fourth Printing of Tarnsman of Gor, the Third Printing of Outlaw of Gor and the First Printing of Tribesmen of Gor, all published in March, 1977. Later that year, the Second Printing of Hunters of Gor carried the Universal logo of the British Fourth Universal-Tandem Series.
The British Fourth Universal-Tandem Series was published in between 1977 (April or later) and September, 1978. The series consists of 10 titles and 11 printings.
The British Fourth Universal-Tandem Series can be identified by the white or black Universal Logo in the bottom-right or bottom-left corner of the front cover. Cover art for Priest-Kings of Gor, Nomads of Gor, Assassin of Gor, Raiders of Gor, Captive of Gor, Hunters of Gor, Marauders of Gor and Slave Girl of Gor by Chris Achilleos (see his signature on the right). As explaned above, for now, I am presuming the cover art of Tarnsman of Gor, Outlaw of Gor and Tribesmen of Goris by Fred Gambino.
